Types

Trucks

Trucks differ from other types of vehicle majorly in terms of size and weight, also in terms of function. Although trucks vary in size and power, there are various categories for trucks, there are smaller or light varieties while the commercial types are large and powerful, an example of this is the type of trucks used as refuse or fire truck.

Categories of trucks

Very light

This category is often referred to as mini-trucks. As the name implies, they are used to carry out light-duty work. They are small in size and function, they are usually available for use in areas of construction, agricultural sector, amusement parks etc.

Light

For light trucks, the weight size is usually around 3.5tonnes, they have a close similarity with a normal type of car as they are structured to carry passengers as well as space to lift heavy equipment.

Light trucks are called pickup trucks, commonly referred to in Australia as utes (similar to utility).

Medium

These categories of trucks are larger than the pickup truck but smaller than the heavy truck. They normally weigh between 5.9 tonnes to 15 tonnes. These types of trucks are used as garbage trucks, fire-fighting trucks etc.

Heavy

These are the largest types of trucks that are classified as on-road trucks. They are used as concrete pump trucks, dump trucks and refuse hauling.

The weight of a heavy truck is about 44 tonnes, and this large weight can lead to road damage.

Off-road

Off-road trucks are usually very weighty and purposefully built for off-road duties. They are built with extra features to suit their use and purpose, most demand for this type of truck is for construction duties.

Various regulations guide the use and purchase of trucks, especially the ones in the higher categories. Australia has a lot of complex regulations over trucks, most of the regulations relating to the weight and length of the truck, as well as the axle spacing or group and other appropriate mechanical function.

Trucks offer different flexibilities based on their categories, for instance, a pickup truck offers a range of possibilities for comfort and utility. Some pickup trucks are 4 door vehicles, giving enough room for passengers as well as a backspace large enough to carry heavy equipment. Trucks are also well designed for navigating difficult terrains, they are suitable for driving through these difficult paths, most of them are four-wheel drive to increase their performance.

Trucks are also chosen due to their durability; they have a lot of structural support to prevent regular wear and tear from the strain of work carried out. No matter what category of truck you are looking for, we can help you get the right model at Andrew Stoner.
